I just subscribed to Grit magazine. Found two women looking to be penpals via snail mail. Think I will return to the old way of "talking" to people.Social media on internet is so diluted, people wander all over the place so many sites get short shrift. Surprised about FB cause all the news is how FB and Twitter are losing members. Of course, who can believe the media anymore. Seems one topic gets beat to death and others get nothing.

Boarder and I went to casino yesterday. We both had $20 free play from booth at fair. I ended up taking home 28. He played money and free play and went away with 200. Then we went to their buffet and ate. That is my type of gambling. Let the casino pay us and then feed us for free. lol. I think this casino is hurting. They have a rep for being stingy with payouts. Then all winter they tore the place to pieces to remodel. Which is now one confusing mess. I believe that players went to other casinos and found better payouts and havent come back. They did a hot seat drawing and the 5 names called were pretty much area people. No tourist city named. I cant see gambling like boarder does. A bird in hand is worth two. Give me free play, I run it out, grab whatever win and then head for the door. Did put in a dollar and did the .25 each for 4 rolls. And lost it. I told him I cant stand to lose that buck. Much less all that other people lose in the hopes of a win. That buck could buy something tangible. And if I am giving it away, will hand it to some kid in the Dollar store to have fun spending. Not some casino.

I miss horse racing but they messed up our horse track when they put in the casino. It's not nearly as nice now. I haven't been out there for years.
I don't mind spending a few dollars at the casino. It isn't any worse than paying for a dinner or a movie. And it's fun.

I get bored with the slots. And I dont go to restaurants nor movies and dont spend that money either. I am not thrifty..I am cheap! lol. What ever happened to parents supporting their kids? All I see on news is how teachers have to supply school items for kids. Fill the bus, feed the kids breakfast, lunch, snacks and a bag for home. I grew up lucky. But, there were lots of poor farm kids and migrant kids as classmates. Their parents got them their school supplies. They were fed and clothed. Maybe no Lunchables, fruit rollups and Nikes. But they were taken care of. The parents saw to it. No one begged for society to provide for their kids. Maybe those parents today have no place having kids. Much less half a dozen by worthless sires. Cant call them fathers cause they dont want that part of it. We are a nation of give me's. I read over half the kids qualify for free lunches. I would guess so did my classmates. Funny thing was dad forwent that beer, mom forwent that cigarette. And the kids lunch was paid for. Joe said he grew up poor after his dad bailed. Ma didnt work, lived on the support dad sent. And he said never remembered feeling poor. Always had enough food to eat. And the basics of needs. Maybe we need parents to get back to being responsible.

Me too. My Dad used to take me with him all the time and I loved it. When we got older, I always took him on Father's Day and gave him money to play the horses and then took him out to eat on the way home. Every Father's Day I wish he was still here so we could go.

There was a horsetrack in my hometown. But by the time I was an adult, they no longer raced there. It turned into off track betting center for other racetracks.
Several casino boats too. But I was a rare visitor

Summer is back with vengeance. 90 today and til Monday when it rains. But, see I lost a half hour of daylight already! Ran the truck into town yesterday when it was still cool. No AC. Wary so parked by bay of lumberyard. Went in, asked a gal the last name of the one that I know and cant remember how! Dont ya luv that? Weyh. OH! Now I know..its my NEIGHBOR! Duh! Paid for the 2x2s. Went out, told guy not chancing starting, truck right outside. And...oh yeah..get in the poly. Yep. How many, 4, take them and went back in to pay for those. And then remembered Sakrete sand cause doing castings and tired of picking stones out of sculpture cause that is on hand. Went back out and said you'll hate me..Nah. He had wood in already, gabbed bag and poly, I grabbed end and he said team work. Loaded and now..will truck start. And it did! Yea!!!! I was proud of self..I actually remembered the poly and cement BEFORE being halfway home!! lol Stopped at library book sale. Paper said 1500 books. I asked if they sold ANY yesterday. She said oh yes! Hard to tell. Found 4. Out to truck..well? And it started. So maybe I can trust it again? The book sale was unreal. Lobby full. Side room full. Main conference room full.Would have thought it WAS the library! I restrained myself. I already own enough books to read for the next ten years! I saw that the eBooks are losing popularity. I have no interest. I want to smell the ink, feel the paper. And cuddle in bed with a book. Not a light emitting thing.

Gotta agree about the book thing. I'm old fashioned. I want books, not tech. Libraries are sad shells of what they used to be. As a kid, libraries were full wall to wall books, Now there's a small selection of books over in the corner, most of the room is filled with computers now

I get ticked at myself when instead of hunting up one of my reference books, I take the easy way out and go on line. I admit that I can find about anything on line. Books can get dated or lack all the available info. The worry is if the net dies. Kids have no idea of books anymore. Or of reading to transport yourself to another time or realm. They just sit and have it fed to them in VR or a screen. Instead of pondering, they are swept along. Instead of imagining being King Henry or Caesar or a soldier huddling in a water filled trench, they just move on to the next input. How often do they hit pause as to us staring into the distance, going over a page we just read. In history, libraries were prized and a city that owned one was known around the world. Now a family doesnt even own a family bible. Is on a Kindle.

Please keep in mind that books on tape were created to help the visually impaired who can't pick up a hard back and read it. They aren't all bad. They have a purpose.
I am not disagreeing that kids today do everything electronically but they are two separate issues.
Books are tape are more readily available than books written in braille. I don't know one library that has braille books.
Someone sent me a book on tape and I have never listened to it. The disadvantage of them for me would be having to listen to the entire thing at once whereas with a book you can read it in segments whenever you choose to pick it up.
The other advantage to looking things up on the web is how fast it is when you need something quickly. I spent half of my life working in government and insurance offices where you needed to have access to laws all of the time. Searching through written manuals took so much time over looking it up online once they automated the manuals.

The internet is for sure faster and easier for researching things, But for good ol plain enjoyment reading,I like real, old fashioned,hands-on reading..give me a real book and turn the page

I hope it isn't broken. This isn't the time of year for that.
We have had rain every day for two months. Constant flooding, roads are all broken up, sink holes everywhere. A parking lot collapsed swallowing 15 parking spaces and 6 cars at a local outlet mall. One person was in her car when it happened but she wasn't hurt. I wish we could send some of this rain to those states with the horrible fires. We had a terrible storm at 5:30 yesterday morning with more on tap for the next two days.

So many people have been hurt and emergency workers killed with all of this water around here. Houses and buildings collapsing. The roof collapsed on one of the schools but they got the kids out safely. Now they have to delay the opening of some of the schools because of the mold which can make people sick. It's kind of a nightmare.

I wish I could send all of you guys some rain. We have had too much and are way over what we should have. Too much damage here from all of the water. We are 16 inches over the average rainfall already this year.

This summer is so crazy. Schools were supposed to open this past week and next week. Many schools had to delay opening because of the mold from all of the rain we've had.
This week schools only opened for three hours in the morning because of the heat. A lot of schools don't have air conditioning which seems rather stupid. Don't they have summer school and events?
The heat index is 110 this week.
